Conducted a comprehensive study on opportunities for trilateral cooperation that arise from the EU’s new focus on cooperation with China in Africa, China’s growing South-South cooperation on climate change with African partners, and African countries’ climate commitments under the UNFCCC Paris Agreement on climate change. We argue that a EU-China-Africa trilateral cooperation pilot project should focus on supporting the implementation of the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative, including the establishment of the Africa Renewable Energy Institute. The discussion paper was commissioned by the German Development Institute and conducted from September 2016 to March 2017.
